Santa Rosa Student Wins College-Sponsored National Merit Scholarship

Congratulations to John Peter Simon of Santa Rosa!

SANTA ROSA, CA — The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of college- and university-sponsored scholarship winners for 2023, and a Santa Rosa student was among them.

Nationwide, 3,000 winners will receive scholarships from their chosen college or university. These awards provide $500-$2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

John Peter Simon, a senior at Cardinal Newman High School, was chosen by Harvey Mudd College to receive a college-sponsored scholarship. John Peter plans to study mathematics at HMU and has chosen that as a probable career field.

This is the third round of National Merit Scholarship winners announced for 2023 — the previous winners received corporate-sponsored awards and $2,500 National Merit Scholarships.

There is one more round of college-sponsored winners which will be released July 10.

This is the 68th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Fewer than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors are chosen as semifinalists in the prestigious competition.
