Work Begins on New South Gate Shopping Center

An old car dealership will be the site of a new mall.

Work towards the building of a new shopping center on the southeast corner of Firestone Boulevard and Garfield Avenue has begun.

“They are in the middle of rough grading,” said Alvie Betancourt, senior planner with the city of South Gate. “This means that they are excavating and clearing the land for construction.”

The site of the shopping center is where the vacant Gonzales Chrysler Dealership previously stood.

The shopping center is expected to have its opening in 2014.
