My Top 5 New Year's Resolutions

Patch editor Kristen Lepore shares her New Year's resolutions. What are yours?

Earlier this week, I told myself I wouldn't be making any New Year's resolutions. I did some research and found most people don't keep then anyway.

But then after further digging, I stumbled upon a list of common New Year's goals and realized not only could I benefit from some of them, but I was already off to a good start. Well, in some aspects.

Write More Often: Two years ago, I started a website: Facebook Ruins Lives. I know what you're thinking: How can an online journalist despise Facebook? I'm a fan of using it for professional purposes but not personal. (As some of you know, I do have a work account. But I never use it.) Regardless, my goal this year is to continue to spread my message by blogging at least once a week on Facebook Ruins Lives.

Start Hiking Again: Ever since I threw up on Runyon Canyon's Hero Trail in September, I haven't been able to hit the trails again. (In my defense, it was hot and sunny—and I probably wasn't properly hydrated.) Maybe I'll join Patch's hiking club to get back in the groove. I've also been wanting to check out

Continue My No-Smoke Streak: As of today, it's been exactly one month without a cigarette. Go me! I always told myself I could quit smoking, but deep down I wasn't quite sure. So here's to whiter teeth, healthier lungs and better breath in 2012!

Give Back:  gave me a taste of how good it feels to give back. Volunteering keeps you busy, allows you to make new friends and gives a purpose to your day. Next on my agenda: restoring South Pas trees. Stay tuned for an article including tips from a local arborist on how to take care of our still-standing greenery. The City already has a Tree Dedication Program but Patch is looking to up the ante. I’ll keep you posted!

Cut My Hair: In the past six months, I've text messaged my hairdresser twice. “I'm finally ready. Are you available to cut my hair this week?” I write. “Of course. When do you want to come by,” she replies. I don't respond. The truth is I love my teenage locks. I haven't been double-carded this many times since Freshman year of college. And even though I get pretty defensive when someone tells me how young I look, I secretly find comfort in knowing it'll pay off some day. So this year, I hope I can find the courage to let go of my do.

Enough about me. What are your New Year's resolutions?
