Photo Gallery: South Pasadena's 125th Anniversary

From cupcakes and burgers to winning essays and vintage photography, the City of Trees celebrated the happiest of birthdays on Saturday.

When one conjures the iconic images of South Pasadena, perhaps the library's Moreton Bay Fig tree or the Rialto Theater come to mind.

Not so for Marengo Elementary's Chan Im.

The second-grader won first place in the school essay contest for his piece on the City of Trees, as part of South Pasadena's 125th anniversary celebration Saturday. So, what does Im like most about his hometown?

"One of my favorite places to go is Rite Aid. First, I like Rite Aid beause of the ice cream,'' he wrote.

Im's homage to the city went on to point out that Vons is pretty cool too, because of the air conditioning.

In addition to the essay, photography and art contests, the city also hosted a cupcake challenge, where officials tasted a variety of sugary treats from local businesses. The winner with its citrus-thyme cupcake with lemony cream cheese icing was Heirloom Bakery and Cafe. The pastry chefs finished the popular dessert with South Pas-grown kumquats and lemon thyme.
