BAY AREA, CA — An opossum was not playing possum last week when it tried to cross the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge, according to the California Highway Patrol.

It happened Feb. 24, and a keen motorist spotted the marsupial trying to cross the upper deck of the Bay Bridge along the right shoulder. The driver quickly alerted CHP dispatch of the animal's crusade.

Personnel with CHP's San Francisco Area responded and found the critter approaching Treasure Island after making a lengthy journey up the incline portion of the bridge.

"As CHP San Francisco Motor Officer Pack located the opossum, an extremely slow-speed pursuit was initiated when the opossum failed to yield to Officer Pack's directions," the CHP said. "The opossum continued westbound in its attempt to evade, even attempting to turn around and escape going the wrong way against traffic. Officer Pack remained focused and kept a close eye on our furry friend while waiting for back-up units to assist with the safe capture of the fleeing perpetrator."

"Our furry opossum friend was safely detained and removed from a dangerous location without further incident," the CHP said. "Special thanks to the alert 911 caller, as well as Julie B. for recognizing and assisting in rescuing this lost furry friend, whose true identity will remain undisclosed at this time."

The CHP said it does not condone stopping on a freeway or bridge to rescue an animal due to the dangers of speeding traffic and potentially distracted drivers.

"This was a unique and unusual situation where someone who was prepared and capable of assisting in this situation was able to help with the safe removal of the animal and will also provide it with potential medical care before its release."
