New Wellness Center Breaks Ground In South San Francisco
San Mateo County is building a new wellness center that will offer lower-income neighbors a place to access all kinds of medical care.

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CA β San Mateo County leaders this week celebrated the groundbreaking of a new health and social services center that will serve as a one-stop shop for lower-income residents seeking medical care.
The North County Wellness Center is now under construction on Mission Road in South San Francisco and is on track to open its doors in 2026. According to the county, the clinics housed within the three-story, 77,000-square-foot facility will serve people and families who have or are eligible for Medi-Cal.
"This center brings essential services closer to the residents who rely on the county and our partners for health care, dental care and more," San Mateo County Supervisor Dave Pine said. "Once it is completed, individuals and families across the north county can meet with specialists to check their eligibility and apply for assistance for programs like CalFresh and low-cost child care all under one roof."

The center will be built utilizing natural, cross-laminated timber, instead of synthetic building materials, which the county said will be more pleasing to the eye, help muffle noise, and be more environmentally friendly. The facility will also feature electric vehicle charging stations, bicycle parking and solar energy stations, aiming to bring the building up to LEED Gold Certification.
"We want to create an environment where people are happy or feel uplifted to be here," said Supervisor David Canepa, the board's vice president. "We want to avoid that feeling you get in so many public buildings where the concrete walls and bad lighting and cramped rooms just feel like they beat you down."

The new wellness center will house a dental clinic with six chairs and imaging capabilities, physical therapy facilities, specialty exam rooms, and behavioral health services, along with satellite offices for the District Attorney and Treasurer.
The project's $132.5 million price tag will be paid for through a mix of general fund money and Measure K tax revenue.
