"Kimberly Akimbo" A Breath of Fresh Air now thru 11/3 at the Pantages
The perfect panacea guaranteed to lift your spirits, illuminate your mind, touch your heart, soothe your soul, and brighten your night!
The Pantages has hit a home run once again with the surprise sensation, Kimberly Akimbo, winner of five 2023 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Book (Pulitzer Prize Winning Playwright David Lindsay-Abaire), Best Score (David Lindsay-Abaire and Jeanine Tesori), Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, and Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical. Jeanine Tesori made history as the first female composer to win two Tony Awards for Best Score. She won previously for Fun Home with Lisa Kron.
The creative team of exemplary experts behind this coming of age with a twist masterpiece, efficiently, effectively, and endearingly depict the life of Kimberly Lavaco, a teenager who suffers from a rare condition that causes her body to age faster than others. Trapped in the physical form of an older woman, Kimberly navigates the typical challenges of adolescence: first love, a dysfunctional family, and the need to fit in.
The dynamic duo of Lindsay-Abaire and Tesori (who were present on opening night) are a force to be reckoned with. Lindsay-Abaire is known for his knack in marrying humor with heart-rending realities and here he once again rises to the occasion. His words are brought to life with gusto vim and vigor by Tesori whose score skillfully complements the narrative beautifully enhancing the emotional impact of key scenes and adding another layer of depth to the storytelling.
