PTA News Meeting Agendas

Most of you have been following the budget cut effects on our library aide and other services at Valley View. In our special PTA meeting last week, we voted unanimously to keep our beloved Library open at its current level next year! With the tremendous work we've done so far this year, we're confident our community can pull together to raise the funds which will keep our teacher assistants as well. Be on the lookout for details of the upcoming fundraising drive and Victory Lap event (formerly known as Moveathon) to finish out the year strong.  Thank you for your continued support. Isn't it amazing what we can accomplish when we work together!

Note that this week's Wednesday 5/9 PTA meeting is "cancelled" and replaced with a committee meeting forSpring Fling Wrap-Up, for all committees. Feel free to join us in the discussion of what worked and what didn't about the festival this year.

Our next PTA Voting meeting will be Wednesday 5/16. Please join us to discuss several other programs and services we will decide about maintaining with PTA funds. We have hard choices to make; come be a part of these decisions. Coffee and pastries will be served.

And the following Wednesday 5/23, we will have a specialFundraising meeting (instead of a PTA meeting) to brainstorm new ideas for next year, discuss what has worked and what could be improved, and ask for renewed commitment to your fundraising energies.  STAFF APPRECIATION

And National Teacher's Day

We had a wonderful luncheon for Staff Appreciation Day on Friday. Parents served our faculty and staff a beautiful luncheon featuring fried chicken, macaroni & cheese, candied yams, salads, pink lemonade, and a variety of other delicacies brought from home, decorated with daisies and red-checkered table cloths for the ultimate picnic... It was a lovely affair and worthy of our gratitude to the faculty and staff who teach and care for our children at Valley View.

(Thank you to SOUL DOG,HEALTHYCA, Rasheeda Scott, Deni Blaise, Catherine Mead, Lissette Rivas,  Stephanie Keyes, Amber Craine, Kelly Cole, Taylor Heredia, Sheree Roberts, Sofia Wetterberg, Caroline Pinkey, Solange Wills, Siobhan DiNardo and Daisy Martinez -and all the other parents who helped and donated food-, for your wonderful food and terrific work!)

Studio City Patch has photos, see here.

Tuesday is National Teachers Day. Please take a moment and
say thank-you to your child's teacher for their guidance of our kids this year. TALENT SHOW Valley View's Got Talent, so please come share it!

Auditions are this Wednesday, May 9th after school in the Library.  The actual date of the Talent Show is Friday, June 8th.  Kelly Cole, Carole Cain and I welcome your act, your music, dance, poem or skit. We are excited and ready to thrill the masses!

See you Wednesday!

Spring Fling Wrap Up

Thank you again for coming out to the Spring Fling at North Weddington Park last Sunday.

We netted over $5,000! But more than making money, we made some terrific memories on a perfect day.

The Pie-Eating Contest winners were Teacher's Division: Dave Getzoff; Adult's Division: Charlie Calderon; Student Division: Adam Vitti.

Our 50/50 Raffle Winners were Charlie Powers, Kathy Weiss and Greg Kessman.

The winners of the Portrait package raffles were Maki Markovich and Bonnie George.

And no one counted how many winners we had at the Cake Walk!

If anyone found a camera, please contact Vicki Nishimura at vicandtosh@yahoo.com. That camera contains priceless pictures of events at Valley View for the yearbook, so we're hoping someone picked it up and rescued it!

Also, if anyone found an iPod, one of our students gave it to a parent to hold while going in the inflatable. If you came across it, please contactinfo@valleyviewelementary.org.

SUMMER  CAMP Ideas?

Know of a terrific summer camp you'd like to share with your Valley View friends? Please send details toinfo@valleyviewelementary.org, and we'll post them each week in the newsletter.

Kallpachay Summer Day Camp
www.kpysummercamp.com
Miriam Epstein, 323-309-8420, kpycamp@gmail.com

This camp is unique in that it is a small, homegrown start up with lots of heart, and the only Spanish language immersion program in the area for five to ten year olds.

Summer is a terrific time to quench the thirst that parents have for their child to experience something new and different while gaining skills that will last a lifetime.  We offer Spanish language instruction as a course of engaging in the activities that all kids love (please see pdf attached and website.)

Better yet we will have options for continuing the progress during the school year as afterschool programs.  Add to this the option (lowest tutoring rates in the area) for group or individual tutoring in English Lang Art and Math in the relaxed comfortable environment of our camp and you have got the perfect mix for the summer doldrums.  So the price is right (only $250 for M-F , 9-4pm) and the time is now.  We are offering free trial classes this month!

FIVE QUESTIONS We Love Miss Lucy

LUSINE SEMERJIAN

This is my second year working at Valley View. I am currently a marketing major at Glendale Community College. I was born in Armenia and raised in Glendale, surrounded by a lot of love, a lot of family, which is a huge part of my life. I was 2 years old when I came to this country, and 16 years later I went back to Armenia, after I graduated high school.  It was such a...I don't know how to describe that feeling, it was amazing.

Q1: What is your job at Valley View?LS: I am a Teacher's Assistant. I work in kindergarten with both rooms 1 and 2. I start with Miss Alvy. I check the kids work, make sure they stay on task, see if they need any additional help, and I do the same with Ms. Hoschen. I sometimes teach a new lesson. Anything the teachers need me to do, I do. I also supervise during snack and lunch time for 1st, and 2nd grades on the yard, and I help supervise at the morning line up before they go into their classrooms.  Q2: How do you feel about being a Teacher's Assistant?LS: I love my job. It's amazing to see the children's changes and growth. Some of them come in at the beginning of the year and they don't even know the alphabet, and by the end of the year they are reading and writing doing all these things, it's just so rewarding. Plus, they brighten your mood, they are just like a breath of fresh air. As the year progresses their personalities start showing. You know this one likes this and that one likes that. It's just so funny to see how different each of them are.
Q3: What do you do to make your day better?LS: I listen to music. Upbeat, fun music always puts me in a better mood, and reminds me of better things.
Q4: What was your first car?LS:  1994 Saturn. Grey. I had to roll down the windows manually. I didn't have a functioning CD player, nothing. The AC was horrible, but I was happy to have it. I scratched it a couple of times, but you couldn't really tell, that's why I loved it. Q5: What makes you happiest?LS: Being surrounded by my family and friends. They have been such a huge influence on my life. Whenever I'm around them I can't help but be happy. It has to do with the way I was raised. We were always together, surrounded by family and happiness and singing and laughing. I'm the most happy when I'm with them.
