CHP Announces DUI Checkpoint For Southwest Riverside County

TEMECULA, CA — The California Highway Patrol's Temecula Area office announced it will hold a DUI checkpoint Saturday, Aug. 31, in unincorporated Southwest Riverside County.

The agency did not release exact times or a location.

"Motorists approaching the checkpoint will see informational signs advising them that a sobriety checkpoint is ahead. Once diverted into the lane, motorists will be detained only a few moments while an officer explains the purpose of the checkpoint and checks their driver license," according to the CHP.

Impaired driving is not just from alcohol and illegal narcotics. Marijuana, as well as some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs, can interfere with driving, officials warn.

"The CHP would like to remind the motoring public to always designate a sober driver. If you drink, consume a drug, or prescription medication that can impair you, please don’t drive," the agency said.

Motorists convicted of a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

Funding for the program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
