Cops Spar In Temecula, Oliver Twist Coming To Town: 5 Things To Know

TEMECULA, CA — Here are five things to know in Temecula this week. We hope it's a good one for all!

1. The Temecula CHP office is hosting a free "Start Smart" class that is open to all teens and their parents. The class, which focuses on providing comprehensive traffic safety education, takes place from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, at Temecula City Hall, 41000 Main Street. "Start Smart employs innovative techniques to capture the attention of teenagers and parents, providing a lasting experience," according to CHP Officer Mike Lassig. "The curriculum includes information on collision statistics, teen driver and passenger behaviors, graduated driver license (GDL) laws, cultural changes in today’s society, and the need for stronger parental involvement in a teenager’s driving experience." 2. A rendition of Lionel Bart's classic musical based on the beloved Charles Dickens novel, Oliver Twist, opens Friday, June 2, at Old Town Temecula Community Theater, 42051 Main Street. The Temecula show, Oliver!, presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International, runs through June 18. The Tony and Olivier Award-winning show is hailed as a theatrical masterpiece. Story plot: After running away from the orphanage run by the heartless Mr. Bumble, Oliver meets the Artful Dodger and is recruited to pick pockets for Fagin. There, Oliver finds a friend in Nancy, but neither she nor the boy is fit for a life of crime. Get tickets and more info here.

3. Police, firefighters and military personnel will square off in the boxing ring Saturday, June 3, during the SoCal Battle of the Badges at Pechanga Resort & Casino, 45000 Pechanga Parkway. "No event is more exciting than live Battle of the Badges boxing, and absolutely nothing can replace the thrill and energy of fans in attendance creating the fight-night atmosphere all of the fighters deserve," according to event organizers. "The Battle of the Badges is a significant contributor to our local communities and contributes financial support to several non-profit organizations that are in desperate need of assistance." This year's event will feature 16 bouts to benefit Cops 4 Kids & Communities and other charities. Doors open at 2 p.m.; the first bout begins at 3 p.m. Get more info here.

4. Bring your bike and your helmet as the city of Temecula celebrates National Trails Day hosted by the Community Services Department on Saturday, June 3. The family-friendly event begins at 8 a.m. in the parking lot of the Old Town Temecula Community Theater (42051 Main Street), located near the Old Town Creek Walk. Enjoy free refreshments, learn about bicycle safety, and explore the trail while participating in a guided bike ride. Maps will be provided for those who would like to enjoy a self-guided ride.
