Memorial Service Announced For Fallen Firefighter From Temecula

TEMECULA, CA — A memorial service for a fallen Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department engineer from Temecula will take place in his hometown, it was announced Monday night.

The service for Fire Apparatus Engineer Danny Cook, 45, is scheduled at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Sunridge Community Church, 42299 Winchester Road.

At the request of Cook's family, the service will not be open to the public or media. Cook is survived by his wife, Joanne, and six children.

Cook died on Dec. 31 after suffering a medical emergency while battling a structure fire in unincorporated Perris.

Just before 5:27 a.m. that day, he was part of a firefighting team called to the 31000 block of Maruchio Road regarding a garage fire in a two-story home. When the firefighters arrived, the garage was engulfed in flames, according to Cal Fire.

During the firefight, Cook suffered a medical emergency, and despite immediate life-saving measures, he ultimately passed away, according to Cal Fire. The nature of the health emergency was not disclosed.

"His passing is a profound loss to the fire service and to all who had the privilege of serving alongside him," Cal Fire said in a news release.

Cook was a "beloved local hero," according to the city of Temecula. He graduated from Temecula Valley High School in 1999 and was a long-time resident of the city.

"He also worked many shifts in Temecula to support our community," the city shared. "His selfless dedication and sacrifice for the protection of others will never be forgotten."

Cook will be remembered for his "professionalism, commitment to service, and the positive influence he had on his fellow firefighters and the community," Cal Fire said. "His legacy will continue to live on through the lives he touched throughout his career.

"We extend our gratitude to the community for its continued support and compassion during this difficult time," the agency continued.
