Why Go: Is your kid the next chess wizard? Hone his or her skills at this free club led by two chess masters. The club will help children ages 8 to 14 learn how to play and the best strategies for winning.

3. NEWARK OPTIMIST CLUB LADY COUGARS HOLIDAY BASKETBALL CLASSIC

Where/When: Newark Memorial High School, 39375 Cedar Blvd., Newark; Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Why Go: This annual tournament features 16 girls varsity and junior varsity teams from all-around the greater Bay Area. Eight teams will play each day.

4. LEAGUE OF VOLUNTEERS BINGO

Why Go: Play bingo for as little as $12 while raising money for the Tri-City Leage of Volunteers.
