Police Log: Drunken Partygoers Threaten to Kill Cops; Suspect Falls Asleep in Stolen Vehicle

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Union City between Jan. 17 and Jan. 23 as released by the Union City Police Department. Reports have been lightly edited for Patch style.
THURSDAY, JAN. 17
Home burglary

Electronics and jewelry were stolen from a home on Deborah Drive. The burglary occurred sometime between 6:30 a.m. and 9 p.m. The suspect(s) kicked open the front door in order to get inside the home.

Man spotted with Airsoft gun at Union Landing
Officers investigated a report of a male holding a gun in Union Landing parking lot near Chili’s at around 7:27 p.m. Witnesses said a male suspect was sitting inside a car holding what looked like a semi-automatic handgun. Officers found the described vehicle as it was leaving the area. Police conducted a high-risk stop on Union City Boulevard and detained two individuals. An “Airsoft” pellet gun was found inside the car. The pellet gun was taken away for destruction and the occupants were released.
11-year-old runaway found
An 11-year-old child was reported missing at 11 p.m. after running away from a Robin Court home following an argument with family members. Officers were assisted by Alameda County search-and-rescue dog teams to help look for the child. UCPD also activated “City Watch” — an automated telephone message — for the surrounding area in order to notify residents of the situation. The child was located later that night.
SATURDAY, JAN. 19
Partygoers threaten to kill police officers, brandish a metal pipe
Three men were arrested on multiple charges after threatening to kill police officers and brandishing a metal pipe at a loud party. Officers initially were called to a noise complaint at a party on 14th Street at around 12:23 a.m. Officers asked the residents to turn down the music but were called to the scene again at 2:42 a.m. Responding officers encountered several drunk men, one of whom grabbed a metal pipe; another said he was going to “kill” the officers. No one was harmed and three men were eventually arrested on various felony and misdemeanor charges.
SUNDAY, JAN. 20
Assault with metal pipe on Basswood Avenue
A person was hit in the head with a metal pipe during an incident on Basswood Avenue. Officers were called to the scene at 5:57 p.m. but the suspect had fled the area before the cops got there.
Suspects point laser-mounted pellet gun at motorists
A motorist reported that two suspects were pointing guns at vehicles driving on Decoto Road near Mission Boulevard. The motorist said the silver firearm had a laser that was pointed at him as he drove in the area. Officers located and detained the suspects. The gun turned out to be an Airsoft pellet gun with a mounted laser light. The case was documented but the victim did not want to press charges.
Drunk driver crashes into fence
A motorist was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence after crashing into the fence of a home at the intersection of Almaden Boulevard and Alvarado-Niles Road at around 11 p.m. The driver tried to run away from the scene but was caught by arriving officers.
TUESDAY, JAN. 22
Craigslist scammer assaults victim in FedEx parking lot
A Craigslist scammer was arrested after punching a person who attempted to buy a cell phone from the suspect. The incident occurred at around 4:30 p.m. when the victim arrived at the FedEx parking lot on Dyer Street to purchase a cell phone he saw listed on Craigslist. The victim met with the suspect who punched the victim int the face and stole the victim’s money. Officers responded to the area and located the suspect vehicle and arrested the suspect on assault charges.
WEDNESDAY, JAN. 23
Suspect falls asleep in stolen vehicle
Officers found a man slumped over the steering wheel of a car parked in the middle of Tamarack Drive around midnight. The car was running but the driver was sound asleep. Officers ran the plate and discovered that the car was reported stolen out of Livermore. The driver was woken up and arrested on suspicion of stealing a car.
