Off-duty police officer points gun at woman during argument in Safeway parking lot

An off-duty police officer drew a handgun on a woman who verbally assaulted his friend and spat on his car in the Safeway parking lot.

According to the report, officers responded to the Safeway parking lot to investigate a report of a man pointing a gun at a woman. Responding officers found that the man, who turned out to be an off-duty police officer, had left prior to their arrival and met with the victim and witnesses.

Through the investigation, authorities learned that a couple — the off-duty officer and a female friend — were walking out of Safeway as another couple — the victim and a male friend — were walking in. The victim recognized the woman who was walking out of the store with the off-duty officer as her brother’s ex-girlfriend and began to yell and curse at her, according to the report.

The couple ignored the victim’s verbal assault and walked to the off-duty officer’s car but the victim continued her verbal assault and threatened to kill the woman, the report said. According to the report, at one point the victim tried to open the passenger door and spat on the vehicle.

Fearing the victim may have a weapon, the off-duty officer stopped his car as he was backing out and exited his vehicle. He pointed a handgun at the victim, told her to back away and identified himself as an off-duty police officer. He told the victim’s friend to get her away from them. The off-duty officer left the scene and went to the Union City Police Department to report the incident.

According to the report, the victim did not wish prosecution, but this case is being sent to the District Attorney’s office for review.
