Police searching for armed bank robbery suspect
Police are searching for a man who held up a teller at Bank of the West Tuesday.
According to police, the robbery took place at about 12:10 p.m. when a lone suspect — described as a heavyset white male in his 50s — entered the bank using a white cane. When the man approached the counter, he pointed a handgun at the teller and threatened to shoot her if she didn’t cooperate.
The suspect appeared to have been wearing a disguise with a rubber mask, a furry Russian-style snow hat, sunglasses, black pea coat and heavy gloves, said Lt. Ben Horner.
The suspect fled the area with an undisclosed amount of money, police said. A witness told police that he may have left in a white panel van with no markings.
According to Horner, the suspect may be a serial bank robber as a similar robbery occurred earlier in the month in San Leandro.
Union City police are working with the FBI and searching surveillance cameras from nearby stores for possible leads.
