Police Log: Purse Robbed at Gunpoint, Attempted Stabbing with Screwdriver

A woman was robbed while checking her mail and a man attempted to stab a victim with a screwdriver. These and other incidents are detailed in this week's crime log.

The following is a collection of reports prepared by the . The document contains only items of note. Dated June 3, the log contains incidents that occurred May 26 to June 3. Reports have been lightly edited for Patch style.

Thursday, May 26

Victim robbed on street

A person was robbed of his cell phone while walking on Fredi Street near Las Palmas Way. The victim told police that he noticed someone throwing rocks in his direction while walking at night. Fearing for his safety, the victim called 9-1-1 and ran toward Alvarado Boulevard. However, multiple suspects gave chase and caught the victim near the Holly Community Center. One of the suspects flashed a knife at the victim, who was forced to hand over his cell phone. The suspects then fled on foot.

Man arrested for drug possession while driving with children

A man was arrested for drug possession while driving with another adult and four young children, according to the report. Officers noticed a speeding vehicle near Alvarado Boulevard and Dyer Street and stopped it on Delores Drive near Regents Boulevard.  Officers learned that the passenger had a felony arrest warrant. According to the report, the driver freely admitted to possessing methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. The officer searched the vehicle and located 1.3 grams of meth. Both adults were arrested and the children were released to an adult relative.

Sunday, May 29

Assault with a deadly weapon

Officers were sent to investigate a family disturbance at a residence on Decoto Road. The call was quickly upgraded to an assault with a deadly weapon when the caller advised police that the suspect tried to stab her and her husband with an ice pick.

During the struggle, the victims were able to disarm the suspect. The suspect had barricaded herself in her bedroom, so an officer began to negotiate with her to open the door and speak to the officers. The officer convinced the suspect to open the door and she spoke to officers briefly before becoming combative with the officers. She was detained in handcuffs and arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and making criminal threats, along with resisting arrest, according to the report.

Domestic disturbance

Officers also responded to a home on Hartnell Street to investigate another domestic disturbance. Arriving officers found the victim with her face bruised and her ear bleeding. The victim told officers that she and her boyfriend, who left before police arrived, had been arguing since the day before, which culminated in her boyfriend hitting her in the face and ears. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The investigating officer spoke to the suspect over the phone and convinced him to surrender himself. The suspect drove to the police station and was taken into custody for domestic battery, according to the report.

Attempted stabbing at family gathering

Later in the night, officers responded to an in-progress stabbing on Teddy Drive. The victim greeted officers and stated that he was uninjured and that the suspect was sitting on a couch in the garage. Officers detained the suspect in handcuffs until they could determine what occurred. Through the investigation, the officer learned that the victim and suspect were at a family gathering drinking alcohol. The suspect got drunk and started insulting other family members. He later picked up a kitchen knife and threatened to stab the victim, chasing him down the street. The suspect threw the knife at the victim in an attempt to stab him, but missed. When this failed, the suspect staggered back to the house. The suspect was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon without further incident.

Monday, May 30

Attempted screwdriver stabbing at Seafood City

Officers responded to the Seafood City Market parking lot located at 31840 Alvarado Boulevard to investigate another attempted stabbing. Arriving officers met with the victim in the parking lot and learned that he and the suspect were engaged in an argument. The suspect briefly left and then returned threatening to kill the victim. The suspect made various thrusting movements toward the victim with a screwdriver, but the victim was able to keep his distance and avoid being injured. The suspect then fled. The officers completed their initial investigation and left the scene. A short while later, the victim called to report that the suspect had returned. Arriving officers found the suspect leaving in a vehicle and stopped him. The suspect was detained, identified by the victim and arrested for assault with a deadly weapon.

Tuesday, May 31

Attempted burglary

Officers responded to a just-occurred residential burglary on Endeavour Way. The victim told officers he was asleep in his bedroom when he heard his doorbell ringing and loud banging on the front door. The victim ignored it and attempted to go back to sleep, but was startled to hear footsteps in the hallway. The victim got out of bed, opened his bedroom door and saw a suspect running down the stairs and out of his house. The victim gave chase and saw the suspect get into an awaiting vehicle which then fled the area.

Suspect arrested on suspicion of forging IDs

Later in the night, an officer stopped a car driving recklessly in the Union Landing parking lot. The officer contacted the driver and learned he was on parole. The officer conducted a search of the suspect and vehicle. While searching the suspect’s vehicle, the officer found another California driver’s license with the suspect’s photograph, but a different name and date of birth. He also found numerous cell phones and equipment used in making false documents and forgery paraphernalia. The suspect was arrested for possession of stolen property, possession of forged documents, and reckless driving, according to the report.

Wednesday, June 1

Purse Robbed at gunpoint

A woman was robbed of her purse at gunpoint after walking home from BART. According to the report, the victim was checking her mail at the Verandas apartment complex located on Union Square when a suspect approached her from behind and demanded her Coach purse at gunpoint. The victim struggled to keep her purse and was knocked to the ground, sustaining minor injuries. The suspect fled on foot. Additional investigative leads were uncovered and are being actively pursued, according to the report.
