Hadnot was killed on June 14 about 5 p.m. on the 4100 block of Venus Place near his home in the Contempo Homes community.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to witnesses, Hadnot appeared to be arguing with a group of teenage suspects. Hadnot was walking away and crossing Venus Place when one of the suspects drew a handgun and shot him in the back, witnesses said. A group of teenagers were seen leaving the area before police arrived.
No arrests have been made as of Monday, though police are investigating a number of leads, Lt. Ben Horner of the Union City Police Department said. He also said there is no hard evidence to support that the assailants were teenagers.
Hadnot’s death was the city’s third homicide of the year and the third within a period of 30 days.
On May 14, , 34, of Union City was shot and killed on the 33600 block of Eighth Street. Just three days later on May 17, , 49, of Union City was shot and killed several blocks away on the 600 block of Whipple Avenue. No arrests have been made in connection with these homicides either, Horner said.
“It’s rare for Union City,” Horner said.
According to UCPD crime statistics, there were 15 homicides total between 2005 and 2009, with the most in 2007 with five homicides. (Figures for 2010 have not yet been released.)
Hadnot’s death occurred on the west side of Union City and does not appear to be related to the Decoto homicides, Horner said.
“Whether the Decoto homicides are related, I don’t know. It’s rare to have two homicides in the same week,” Horner said about the May killings.
This weekend, Hadnot’s family celebrated their first Father’s Day without him.
“Happy Father’s Day my love,” Irlanda wrote in a Facebook post. “I know that you will always be protecting me and our children. You have always been a great father and our children love their daddy soo soo much!”
A viewing for Keith Hadnot II will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 25, at Fremont Memorial Chapel (3723 Peralta Blvd., Fremont), followed immediately by a funeral and reception.
