Atmospheric River, Flood Watch, High Wind Watch In Walnut Creek: What To Know

WALNUT CREEK, CA — A wet Christmas is barreling toward Walnut Creek and the entire Bay Area as multiple atmospheric rivers approach. The city will be under a Flood Watch from Tuesday at 10 a.m. until Friday at 10 p.m., and a High Wind Watch from Tuesday at 7 p.m. until Wednesday at 4 p.m.

A total of two to four inches is expected across the Bay Area interior region, while as much as six inches is expected in higher elevations. Winds from 20-30 mph and gusts of up to 60 mph are expected Tuesday night.

The atmospheric river has already brought as much as four inches of rain to parts of the North Bay, and two and a half inches to Mt. Diablo. The rain has brought flash flooding, water rescue, and at least one confirmed death, according to authorities.

Five sandbag stations are available in Walnut Creek:

• Lancaster Road near Orchard Lane
• Heather Farm Park Ballfield 5&6 parking lot (adjacent to the Dog Park)
• Larkey Park parking lot
• Howe Homestead Park parking lot
• Rudgear Park parking lot

Bags and sand are provided, but shovels are not.

The National Weather Service also advises cleaning gutters and drains of leaves, driving slowly on wet roadways, and allowing for extra travel time. Due to the high winds, all large items outside should be brought in or tied down.
