Fatal Crash Briefly Shuts Down I-680 Lanes Near Walnut Creek

The collision involving a pedestrian prompted the closure of all southbound lanes north of Treat Boulevard.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — All southbound lanes of Interstate Highway 680 were shut down early Thursday morning by a fatal crash near Walnut Creek, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Shortly after 4:30 a.m. Thursday, the CHP was dispatched to southbound I-680 where a man was reportedly down in the middle lane near Contra Costa Boulevard.

A Toyota Corolla traveling southbound was unable to avoid the pedestrian and struck them, the CHP said.

The coroner's office was contacted and a sig-alert was issued at 4:43 a.m. for all southbound lanes just north of Treat Boulevard.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the Toyota was not injured.

All southbound lanes were reopened by 6 a.m. but the fatal crash remained under investigation.

Witnesses told authorities a big rig was possibly involved.

"Our preliminary investigation indicates there may be an additional vehicle involved or other witnesses that have information about the events of the crash," the CHP said.
