Help Local Seniors Beat the Heat: Join the Meals on Wheels Diablo Region Fan Club!
Donate a new fan to MOW Diablo Region, and we'll deliver it directly to a senior in need this summer.
As summer temperatures rise, many of us can escape the heat with air conditioning, a dip in the pool, or a short drive to the coast, but for too many older adults in our community, staying cool isn’t so simple. That’s why Meals on Wheels Diablo Region is inviting neighbors to step up and help by joining our Fan Club: a seasonal donation drive to provide new fans to vulnerable seniors in need.

While fans of all shapes and sizes are welcome, rotating tower fans are especially appreciated. “Many of our seniors are chair-bound or struggle with extremely limited mobility,” explains Lidia Gutierrez, Care Management & Outreach Manager at Meals on Wheels Diablo Region. “They really benefit from tower fans with remote controls, which allow them to adjust the settings without needing to get up, keeping them safe, cool, and comfortable on hot days.”

Why it matters: The dangers of heat for older adults

Extreme heat isn’t just uncomfortable—it can be dangerous. According to the National Institute on Aging, older adults are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses because their bodies don't adjust as well to sudden temperature changes. Some medications or chronic conditions can also affect how their bodies respond to heat.
Without proper cooling or hydration, seniors are at greater risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, which can come on quickly and be life-threatening if not treated. That’s why something as simple as a fan can be a life-saving gift.
