Meals on Wheels Diablo Region to end Breakfast Bag program
Funding cuts and increased costs have led to the unfortunate conclusion of a vital program for more than 500 local seniors.
Meals on Wheels Diablo Region launched the Breakfast Bag program in 2020 to provide additional support for vulnerable older adults during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. What began as a small effort serving about 100 seniors has grown to reach more than 500 clients each week, with demand continuing to rise.
The program was initially made possible through Contra Costa County funding and temporary pandemic relief dollars. However, as the costs of groceries, fuel, and other necessities have risen, the demand for Breakfast Bags has also outpaced the funding available to sustain it. Despite our best efforts to secure ongoing support, we have made the difficult decision to conclude the Breakfast Bag program effective October 2, 2025.
We recognize the significant impact this service has had on many of our clients, and we are actively exploring new funding opportunities with the goal of reviving the program in a more sustainable manner. In the meantime, our flagship home-delivered meal program will continue serving more than 1,900 local seniors every week without interruption. Our commitment remains the same: to ensure the most food-insecure older adults in our community continue to receive the nutrition and care they need to live safely and independently at home.
