Full-time, Non-exempt
Pay range: $22.60-$26.77/hr


The Horticulturist evaluates and executes superior Garden care, maintenance, protection, and improvements. The Ruth Bancroft Garden is a 3.5-acre collection of rare and unusual succulent and dry garden plants, and it is the Garden team that is responsible for its care and cultivation. This position collaborates with the Ruth Bancroft Garden team members to assure proper Garden operations, implementation of products, and special projects success.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and assure appropriate plant watering, weeding, pruning, deadheading, manicuring, and fertilizing of Garden
  • Perform structural soil, and top-dressing amendments
  • Propagate and salvage plant material from garden; cut out damaged tissue
  • Collaborate with team members to assure Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
  • Provide infrastructure repair and maintenance including irrigation system, lighting, fences, pathways, and shade structures
  • Assist Curators with accessioning and labeling as needed
  • Work major events as needed, including evenings and weekends
  • Enrich the visitor and client experience and adhere to procedures, guidelines, and policies outlined by the Garden
  • Perform additional assignments and projects as requested by the Garden Manager or the Executive Director.

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Language Ability: Read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Write simple correspondence. Effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees
  • Mathematical Ability: Add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Compute rate, ratio and percent, and draw and interpret bar graphs
  • Reasoning Ability: Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations..
  • Computer Skills: Microsoft Office.

Experience: A minimum of two years of professional experience working in a garden, conservatory, or greenhouse.

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a work-related discipline or field, or 4 years equivalent experience plus a minimum of two years professional experience working in a garden, conservatory, or greenhouse.
