EAST BAY, CA — Help the East Bay Regional Park District beautify and preserve our local shorelines and waterways during the 39th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day, to be held from 9 a.m. until noon, Saturday, Sept. 23.

The Park District selected seven sites for cleanup, including bayside beaches, shoreline trails and inland lakes, where staff and volunteers will pick up litter and recyclables. At last year’s event, Park District volunteers picked up an estimated 10,500 pounds of trash.

This year, there is a special giveaway; volunteers who find an odd or interesting item earn an East Bay Regional Park District hip pack — while supplies last.

"Every year while cleaning the shores, we discover wonderful oddities," said Jen Vanya, a spokesperson for the Park District. "Some of our more unusual finds include a 2006 couples skating trophy, ornate hand-carved wooden ship decorations, and even a wedding dress!"

Participants are encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle, a hat, gloves and sunscreen. While garbage bags and gloves are provided, volunteers are welcome to bring their own items as well. Participants should wear closed-toe shoes and layered clothing. Snacks, water and garbage bags are provided.
