Walnut Creek Couple Married For 65 Years Dies 2 Months Apart

A celebration of life will be held for Lo and Sue McCarley at 1:30 p.m. this Saturday at Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church.

WALNUT CREEK, CA — Lo and Sue McCarley met at an outdoor concert in Manhattan, fell in love, and got married in April 1956. They were married for 65 years before Sue died in December, followed by Lo in February. A celebration of life will be held for the couple at 1:30 p.m. this Saturday at Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church.

The couple is survived by their three sons and their families — Stuart and his wife Sue; Craig and his wife Elizabeth and children Connell and Darcey; and Kent and his wife Kim.

Susan Dunbar McCarley (1931 - 2022) was a graduate of Ohio State, then moved to New York for an internship at Cornell Medical Center, in Manhattan.

Lowman Watson McCarley (1930 - 2022) was a graduate of UCLA who went to work for Del Monte in San Francisco. The company transferred him to New York, setting up his fateful meeting with Sue. After the couple married, the company transferred McCarley back to California. After a brief time in San Francisco, they moved to Walnut Creek in 1958. All three sons were born here.

Lo retired from Del Monte after more than 30 year, then began a new career as an IT Auditor for US Leasing.

Sue worked for Chevron preparing personal taxes for overseas employees.

Both Lo and Sue were active in the community from scout leaders and PTA officers to their shared commitment to Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church. Together they enjoyed cruising, traveling, and visiting Elder hostels.
