3.4 Earthquake Hits Near Monterey Bay

The 10:40 a.m. earthquake happened on the San Andreas Fault, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Santa Cruz County, CA — An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude reading of 3.4 was felt in the Bay Area.

The epicenter was Interlaken, seven miles east of Watsonville, according to the United States Geological Survey Shake Map.

The earthquake was recorded at 10:40 a.m.

According to preliminary information, the earthquake happened on the San Andreas Fault, California's main strand of the plate boundary, running from the Gulf of California north to the region of Cape Mendocino. The strike-slip fault runs through the Santa Cruz Mountains, and was responsible for the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. While the earthquake was not produced by the main San Andreas Fault, it occurred on a closely associated blind thrust fault that had formed as a result of a bend in the San Andreas Fault, south of the bay. The Loma Prieta earthquake resulted in 64 deaths, most from the collapse of the Cypress Freeway in Oakland. About 16,000 homes and apartment units were uninhabitable after the earthquake. The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was closed for more than a month because of a collapse of a section of its eastern span.

No information is immediately available about injuries or damage on Tuesday.
