6-Acre Vegetation Fire At San Ardo Oil Field Extinguished

BREAKING: Fire investigators said a faulty electrical connection caused the blaze.

MONTEREY COUNTY, CA — Firefighters extinguished a 6-acre vegetation fire in the San Ardo Oil Field on Wednesday, Cal Fire officials said. The fire was between 2 and 3 acres when crews arrived around 10:40 a.m. and was contained to 6 acres by about 12:10 p.m.

Investigators determined the cause of the fire to be a faulty electrical connection. No injuries were reported, Cal Fire spokesman Jonathan Pangburn said. San Ardo, located north of Wunpost in southern Monterey County, is the eighth most productive oil field in the state with an annual production rate of 7.8 million barrels, according to the California Department of Conservation's 2015 annual report of California Oil and Gas Production Statistics.
