CA Teacher Accidentally Fires Gun During Class; Injures Student

The high school teacher was identified as a reserve officer and a city council member.

SEASIDE, CA -- At least one high school student was injured Tuesday when a teacher accidentally fired a gun during class while teaching about public safety. The Californian reported Dennis Alexander, who serves on the City Council and is a reserve officer, accidentally fired the gun during his "Administration of Justice class" and Seaside High School in Monterey County.

"He was pointing the gun at the ceiling when he inadvertently fired it, said Abdul Pridgen, chief of the Seaside Police Department," the Californian reported. "One student suffered an injury to his neck from either bullet fragments or debris falling from the ceiling."

The student is expected to survive. Alexander was placed on leave as the police department and the is school investigating the incident, the Californian reported.

"Guns and other weapons are prohibited on campus, though there are exceptions involving law enforcement," Pridgen told the Californian.

The incident comes as students nationwide plan to walk out during classes to protest gun violence.
