Landslide Covers Highway 1 In 40 Feet Of Dirt: Caltrans

MONTEREY COUNTY, CA — A major landslide in Monterey County covered roughly 1,500 feet of state Highway 1 with more than 1 million tons of rock and dirt Saturday evening, according to Caltrans. A series of five slides in the Mud Creek area, 9 miles north of the San Luis Obispo County line, consolidated into a single slide reaching all the way down to the ocean floor, 250 feet off the shoreline.

The portion of the slide covering Highway 1 is thought to be 35 to 40 feet deep. Caltrans officials plan to assess the area when it becomes stable again, but for now there is no estimate for when Highway 1 will reopen in the area.
