Las Vegas Boxer And Retired NorCal Cop Sentenced In Welfare Fraud Case

Jaime Mitchell, 32, received welfare benefits for her and her son from the Monterey County for two years, according to prosecutors.

MONTEREY COUNTY, CA — A professional boxer who lives in Las Vegas and a retired Seaside cop have been sentenced to three years of probation for welfare fraud, Monterey County prosecutors said Thursday. Jaime Mitchell, 32, received welfare benefits for her and her son from the Monterey County Department of Social Services from 2014 to 2016, according to prosecutors.

She moved to Las Vegas, however, which made her ineligible for those benefits, and failed to report that fact to the county. The move was discovered by a social services employee who was reading a news article about
Mitchell's boxing career. Mitchell maintained that she was still living in Monterey County
and renting a room from 60-year-old Barry Pasquerosa, a retired Seaside police officer.

Pasquerosa filed forms with social services on Mitchell's behalf and attempted to cover up for her, prosecutors said. He also used her benefits, which is illegal. In addition to their probation sentence, Mitchell and Pasquerosa have paid $13,640 restitution, according to prosecutors.
