Rabid Bat Exposes Pet To Deadly Virus In Monterey County
A rabid bat found in Monterey County exposed a pet to the virus, according to health officials.
MONTEREY COUNTY, CA — A bat found in the Toro Park area of Monterey County tested positive for rabies and exposed a pet to the virus, health officials said Friday.
The bat was found southwest of Salinas on Tuesday near Toro Creek Road, the Monterey County Health Department said in a press release.
While no human was threatened, the pet exposed to the virus has been placed under quarantine, the health department said.

Rabies is a virus that can be fatal to humans and other mammals. In Monterey County, skunks and bats are the most common species to test positive for the virus. Domestic animals, including companion dogs and cats, are at risk for rabies exposure when they come in contact with wildlife.
