Skunk And Fox Test Positive For Rabies In NorCal

"Domestic animals, including companion dogs and cats are at risk for rabies throughout Monterey County."

SALINAS, CA — A skunk and a fox, found a day apart in northeast Salinas last month, have tested positive for the rabies and exposed pets to the virus, public health officials say.

Pets exposed to rabies have been placed under quarantine while officials investigate to determine any potential human exposure, the Monterey County Health Department said in a statement Friday.

The skunk was found Feb. 20 near Del Monte Avenue and Rider Avenue, while the fox was discovered Feb. 21 near Constitution Boulevard and East Laurel Drive, the health department said.

While the virus is most commonly found in skunks and bats, "Domestic animals, including companion dogs and cats are at risk for rabies throughout Monterey County," the department said.

Owners should avoid leaving their pets outside unattended, particularly at dawn and dusk when wildlife can be most active, the department advised.
