Deputies learned the threats stemmed from a rivalry between football teams at Carmel High School and Pacific Grove High School, sheriff's officials said.

The rivalry surrounded a "Shoe" game between both schools in November, according to sheriff's officials.

Personnel from the Carmel Unified School District and Pacific Grove Unified School District were cooperative with the investigation, sheriff's officials said.
