Two Injured in Massive Soberanes Fire

More than 5,600 fire personnel are working to extinguish the blaze that is still threatening 2,000 homes.

MONTEREY COUNTY, CA — Two people were injured sometime Thursday or Friday in a massive wildfire in Monterey County that has killed one and destroyed 57 homes, a fire information officer said.

The two people suffered injuries that are not considered life-threatening, Soberanes Fire spokeswoman Deb MacLean said. She did not have any more information about the incidents. The Soberanes Fire started when someone abandoned an illegal campfire at about 9 a.m. on July 22 in Garrapata State Park.

The fire has burned 55,600 acres, prompting a state of emergency declaration for Monterey County on July 26. As of 2:50 p.m. Saturday the fire was 40 percent contained but it may take until the end of the month to contain all of it, MacLean said.
