Woman Killed In Watsonville Wreck; Arrest Made

WATSONVILLE, CA — A Moss Landing woman was killed early Sunday morning in a Watsonville car crash.

The 45-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Johanna Mayapuga, 22, of Santa Cruz was the driver in the other car involved in the wreck. She was arrested on suspicion of a felony driving under the influence of alcohol charge.

CHP was called to the area of southbound State Route 1, south of Airport Boulevard, shortly after midnight.

Mayapuga drove northbound in the southbound lanes, north of Main Street, CHP said. Her 2015 Nissan crashed head-on into the 2002 BMW containing a driver and the deceased, CHP said.

The Nissan stopped in the #3 lane of State Route 1 and the BMW stopped in the west shoulder, its rear on the guardrail.

The BMW driver, a 46-year-old Moss Landing man, and Mayapuga were hospitalized at Natividad Medical Center. He suffered major injuries, while hers were moderate, CHP said.
