Patch's quick take on the essential things to know, the most interesting things to do and best places to be on Friday, Aug. 2.

Here's a handful of things to keep in mind for today.

If you have an event you'd like us to consider for Five Things, be sure to add it to the events calendar. We check it often!

    • See a free screening of Ferris Bueller's Day Off as part of Westfield Topanga's Rooftop Movies series at 8:15 p.m. today. Food will be available for purchase. Movies are screened on top of the Owensmouth garage at the mall, 6600 Topanga Canyon Blvd.
    • The police are out in force all over the Valley this weekend looking for drivers under the influence. A Sobriety and Driver’s License Checkpoint has been announced for 8 p.m. tonight to 2 a.m., Saturday, at Lankershim Boulevard at Vanowen Street in North Hollywood and at Roscoe Boulevard at Coldwater Canyon Avenue in Sun Valley. There will also be a DUI Saturation Patrol from 5 p.m. Sunday to 1 a.m., Monday, in the Van Nuys area.
    • The San Fernando Valley Audubon Society hosts a bird walk from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Area at 6350 Woodley Ave., Encino. For more information, call 818-346-6712.
    • The Movie and Concert on the Green scheduled for this weekend at Warner Center Park are Hotel Transylvania, which screens at 7 p.m. Saturday and and Robby Krieger of The Doors at 6 p.m. Sunday. Both events, sponsored by the Valley Cultural Center, are free.
    • The fee-for-all battle between Time Warner Cable and CBS faces another deadline at 2 p.m. today (5 p.m. Eastern). TWC claims the network wants a 600 percent increase in retransmission fees. The New York Times reports it is more like 20-25 percent.
