Sutter County bans industrial hemp, ends troubled trial with controversial crop (sacbee.com) — Sutter County supervisors have voted to ban industrial hemp growing and processing, a move that aligns with existing bans on marijuana activities in both Sutter County and Yuba City. The decision follows complaints about odor, law-enforcement costs, and alleged marijuana operations tied to licensed hemp growers. The ban takes effect January 15 and effectively ends local hemp farming for now.
   

3. 2025 USA Rice Outlook: Great attendance in The Big Easy (farmprogress.com) — A Yuba City resident, Alec Magenheimer, has been selected for the prestigious 2026 Rice Leadership Development Class, announced at the USA Rice Outlook Conference in New Orleans. The two-year program will immerse him and other young leaders in all facets of the U.S. rice industry. The conference drew record post-pandemic attendance and highlighted key awards, policy discussions, and market trends.
   

4. JAMES M. 'JIM' BELL • 12/19/1963 – 11/23/2025 (colusacountynews.com) — Longtime law enforcement officer James “Jim” Bell, who once served with the Yuba City Police Department and later the Sutter County District Attorney’s Office, has died at 61. Raised in Arbuckle, he devoted more than three decades to public safety and teaching future officers before his burial alongside his mother in Arbuckle Cemetery.
