City Of Arvada: Shared Micromobility Pilot Program Launching In Arvada

The City of Arvada is partnering with the Los Angeles, California based, shared electric scooter company, Bird Rides, to bring e-scooters to the City soon. The scooters are available through a mobile phone application and riders pay to use the scooter per minute, at no cost to the City.  The scooters are part of a new Shared Micromobility Pilot Program that will allow shared mobility devices which may include electric scooters, shared bicycles, and e-bikes to be used in a one-mile radius around RTD G Line stations in Arvada. 

The Arvada City Council approved a shared micromobility pilot program on Aug. 16, 2021. The project was recommended by the City’s Transportation Committee. The intent of the project is to help with transit connectivity and mobility around the new RTD G Line stations in Arvada. The Transportation Committee, a citizens’ committee, studies, recommends and participates in a variety of efforts to foster a safe, efficient and sustainable multi-modal transportation system throughout the City of Arvada.

Prior to presenting the pilot program to Arvada City Council, the Public Works team engaged in community outreach to assess the community’s interest in shared micromobility as well as understand concerns. One concern was that devices be operated in a safe manner.  “As new shared micromobility devices are added into the community, we want to make sure that users are aware of the rules to operate and park these devices,” said Kellee Van Bruggen, Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator with the City of Arvada. “By having a standard set of rules for the devices, we can mitigate concerns related to users and non-users safety.”

The electric scooters can be used on roads and in bike lanes and have a maximum speed of 15 mph. Scooters must be parked out of the way of pedestrians and never blocking driveways. Riders are required to be 18 years-old and above to access the scooters. They are also encouraged to wear a helmet on every ride and required to obey all standard rules of the road.
