Local Cannabis-Infused Beer Is Here

Arvada company Ceria brewing has brewed its first batch of Grainwave Belgian White Ale, infused with 5 milligrams of THC extract.

ARVADA, CO — It's finally here. Arvada's Keith Villa, former head brewmaster of Blue Moon, has created his first batches of THC-infused non-alcoholic beer. The first bottles of Grainwave Belgian White Ale were brewed this week, according to the company.

“We spice it with blood orange peel and coriander,” Villa told Denver7.

Villa retired from MolsonCoors in early 2018 to form his Arvada-based company, Ceria Brewing, run out of a garage behind his house.

The beer is brewed, then processed to remove the alcohol.

The company can be located in town, even though Arvada has a moratorium on recreational or medical marijuana dispensaries, because the 5 milligrams of THC extract in each non-alcoholic bottle will be added in remote locations.

“This is not a product just to get you high. This is a project for people to enjoy cannabis in a way that is socially acceptable,” Villa said in an interview.

Villa and his wife Jodi Villa, a co-founder, have partnered with cannabinoid research firm ebbu to get the right mix of THC.

The company's beer uses cannabis formulas which can be delivered in specific doses in a water-soluble format, a statement from the company said in April.

These cannabis formulations – containing THC and other cannabinoids and terpenes – will be processed and infused by licensed marijuana processors, bottled and/or canned on-site by the licensee, and then sold chilled in licensed dispensaries, first in Colorado, then in other states where the use of recreational marijuana is legal.

"CERIA derives its name from the university campus in Brussels, Belgium, where Keith became one of the few people in the world to receive a doctorate in brewing science based upon his dissertation on complex biochemical reactions in beer," the company said in an April press statement.

The other good news? because there's no alcohol, the new beer is less fattening.

You'll soon be able to buy four-packs of Ceria Grainwave on the shelves of local pot dispensaries (but not in Arvada).
