Officer Shoots, Kills Man In Westminster

A man fired shots at an officer, who returned fire, Westminster police said.

WESTMINSTER, CO — An officer shot and killed a man in an exchange of gunfire in Westminster Sunday afternoon, police said. The man fired shots at the officer in the 10300 block of Wadsworth Parkway before the officer fired back, Westminster police said.

Officers were called to the area around 2:30 p.m. after they received a report of a car crash. They found a man walking in a ditch, and when they tried to make contact with him, he fired shots at them, police said.

The officer fired back and struck the man, who later died in the hospital. The officer was not injured, police said.

The vehicle the man was driving was stolen in an armed carjacking earlier in the day, investigators said.

The identity of the man who was killed was not released.

The area along 104th Avenue between Holland and Garrison streets was blocked off for several hours Sunday evening while an investigation was underway.
