Olde Town Shooting: No Charges For Officer Who Shot Johnny Hurley

ARVADA, CO — Prosecutors will not charge an Arvada police officer in the June shooting of Samaritan Johnny Hurley, the Jeffco district attorney announced Monday.

Hurley, 40, was shot and killed June 21 by the police officer after Hurley shot a gunman in Olde Town, the Arvada Police Department confirmed. The gunman shot and killed Arvada officer Gordon Beesley before Hurley arrived.

A multi-agency Critical Incident Response Team — under the direction of Jefferson County DA Alexis King — investigated Hurley's death. The DA's office decided not to charge the Arvada officer with the shooting.

Beesley was called to Olde Town after he received a report of a suspicious person. Hurley was in a store nearby, when he heard gunshots and ran out to stop the gunman, authorities said. Hurley shot the gunman, but when officers arrived, they saw Hurley standing over a body and believed he was a second mass shooter, King said.

After the deadly shooting, Arvada Police Chief Link Strate called Hurley a "true hero" and said he likely saved lives.

Many community members expressed their anger over Hurley's death, but his mother, Kathleen Boleyn, encouraged people to ignite change.

"I imagine that many people are angry and that is understandable," she said in a statement released through Hurley's attorney.

"I would ask that instead of acting out on your anger, that you use that energy to be the change you wish to see in the world. Engage in meaningful conversations that might make a difference in how we all may move forward together."
