Town leaders cite high housing costs, cramped facilities, and a tight statewide hiring market for officers as key reasons behind the staffing crunch and the need for outside support.

Basalt Police Department deploys AI technology to save time doing reports, paperwork (soprissun.com) — Basalt’s police officers are testing new AI software that turns their Axon body-camera footage into draft reports, freeing them from hours of paperwork during a time of significant understaffing. The Code Four system is currently in demo mode, and town officials still must decide whether to budget for it long-term, weighing costs against the benefit of getting officers back out on local streets faster.
   

3. Basalt Report: Wary of costs, Town considers dialing back Basalt PD/Public Works construction plan (soprissun.com) — Basalt Town Council is reworking plans for a combined Police Department and Public Works building to cut millions from the original $28.5 million price tag and possibly avoid a sales tax increase. Revised designs shrink both departments’ spaces, drop a shared lobby, and consider phasing construction, while officials weigh grants, restricted funds, and even reusing an existing building.

The Carbondale trustees also approved their 2026 budget, restored parks and recreation amenities, and pledged major financial support to help residents buy the Cavern Springs Mobile Home Park.
