Man Arrested In Connection With Mother's Death in Boulder County

Jeffrey Apprill, 55, is accused of negligence, caretaker neglect and tampering with a deceased human body.

BOULDER COUNTY, CO — A man was arrested Tuesday in connection with his mother's death in a home north of Boulder, authorities said.

Jeffrey Apprill, 55, was charged with tampering with a deceased human body, criminal exploitation of an at-risk person, at-risk negligence resulting in serious bodily injury, caretaker neglect and concealing a death, the Boulder County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies were called to check on 78-year-old Karen Apprill in the 3900 block of Bosque Court on Aug. 28, 2020. The deputies were told that her son was in the hospital and that she hadn't been heard from in more than a week.

Deputies found the mother's body decomposing inside the home, and later learned that she had died between 7 and 10 months prior to the discovery, according to the sheriff's office.

"During the autopsy, Karen’s body was described as being in the advanced stages of decomposition and both antemortem and postmortem trauma was discovered," the sheriff's office said in a news release.

"Karen’s cause of death was listed as undetermined and the mechanism of death could not be determined."

Detectives worked with Boulder County Adult Protective Services and served multiple search warrants in their investigation.

"Based on statements and physical evidence investigators are not able to determine the cause and manner of Karen’s death however they were able to establish probable cause to arrest Jeffrey Apprill for the above listed charges," the news release read.

His first court date has not yet been announced.
