Broomfield Library Eliminates Fines For 2019
All check-outs will be fine-free in 2019 at Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library system.

BROOMFIELD, CO β Afraid to set foot in Broomfield's library because you're a fine-scofflaw? Worry no more! The entire Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library system will go fine-free starting Jan. 2. (The library is closed on New Year's Day).
Broomfield's City Council approved the elimination of fines in September, at the recommendation of Abby Yellman, director of Library Services and Cultural Affairs.
Like many library systems, Broomfield's research showed that fines did not actually improve the return rate of checked out materials, and instead kept people away from the library. Up until now, a patron's account was blocked after $10 worth of fines.

Data showed that Broomfield's library had 6,000 blocked users and 500 of those were children. In June, the library's advisory board voted 5-2 to eliminate fines at the library in 2019.
Other libraries, such as Denver, Arapahoe County and Littleton's Bemis library have eliminated fines starting this year as well.
