FREDERICK, CO –The woman who was having an affair with accused Frederick husband Chris Watts said when they met she believed he was finalizing his divorce.

Nichol Kessinger spoke to the Denver Post Thursday, saying Watts appeared to be a "soft-spoken man and thoughtful father" when they met.

But when Watts's pregnant wife and two daughters went missing in August, Kessinger said she found out that he had been lying about his divorce during their time together, less than two months.

Watts, 33, will be sentenced Monday in Weld County. He pleaded guilty last week to killing his wife, Shanann Watts, 34, and their two daughters Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3. Prosecutors said Watts disposed of their bodies on a Weld County an oil and gas site where he worked, burying Shanann in a shallow grave and dumping the girls' bodies in oil tanks.

Watts and his lawyers hoped to avoid the death penalty by accepting a plea deal, which prosecutors accepted after getting permission from Shanann Watts' family.

Kessinger told the Denver Post that before Watts' arrest, she went to authorities and spoke several times with investigators. Kessinger said she never doubted that Watts had killed his wife and daughters.

“I don’t think there is a logical explanation for what he did,” she said. “It’s a senseless act, and it’s horrific.”
