Deputy Killed, Officers Shot In Colorado Springs

BREAKING: Deputy Micah Flick, 34, a veteran detective of the El Paso Co. Sheriff's Office was shot and killed in the line of duty.

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO -- One deputy was reportedly killed and others shot Monday afternoon in Colorado Springs. Officials said the incident happened near North Murray Boulevard and Galley Road around 4 p.m.

El Paso Sheriff identified the slain deputy as Micah Flick, 34, in a Twitter post.

"Flick is survived by his wife and 7 year old twins. Today was his 11 year anniversary with EPSO, and our hearts are broken," the El Paso Co. Sheriff posted.

"The procession for Deputy Flick will start at St. Vrain and Hancock to the El Paso County Coroners Office at 7:30."

The incident started around 4 p.m. with officers from the El Paso Sheriff's Dept, Colorado Springs Police and Colorado State Patrol investigating a vehicle theft in the 4400 block of Galley Road, said Chief Pete Carey of the Colorado Springs Police Dept. in a press conference.

A struggle ensued with a male suspect during the attempted arrest, Carey said. In that conflict, shots were fired, killing the male suspect and Deputy Flick, Carey said. Two other sheriff's deputies were injured and so was a Colorado Springs Police officer, and two civilian bystanders. They were all taken to Memorial Hospital, where the Colorado Springs officer was undergoing surgery at 7 p.m. and was listed in stable condition, Carey said.

"This is a difficult day for all our agencies," Carey said. "Our hearts are broken."

El Paso Co. Sheriff Mike Elder said Flick was a detective in the investigations division had started with the sheriff's office in 2007.

"Deputy Flick was an outstanding member of my agency and he will be missed," Elder said.

The sheriff's spokesperson said the agency's Deadly Forece Investigations Team would be continuing the investigation.

The shooting comes about one month after two other sheriff's deputies were killed in the line of duty in Colorado. Deputy Zack Parrish was killed and several other officers injured Dec. 31 when officials said Matt Riehl opened fire on the deputies, shooting more than 100 rounds. He was later killed by a SWAT team.

Another deputy, Heath Gumm, was buried Friday after being shot Jan. 24 by a suspect during a call in Thornton.

Governor John Hickenlooper called the shooting "[a] senseless act of violence [that] claimed the life of another member of Colorado's law enforcement family," the governor said in a statement.

Late this afternoon, we learned the El Paso County Sheriff's Office Deputy Micah Flick was killed, two other deputies were injured, as well as a Colorado Springs police officer and two bystanders. With the recent loss of now three deputies and many others injured, there's no denying the grave impact this sequence of shootings is having on our state.
We will once more come together to provide sympathy and strength for the deputy's loved ones and pray for the recovery of those injured; however we must also come together and say enough is enough. We want each officer, every deputy, to know we are grateful for their service.
