📰 News we're reading

1. COS Airport sees almost 6% decrease in November passengers, government shutdown takes partial blame (koaa.com) — Passenger traffic at Colorado Springs Airport dropped 5.6% in November, with officials partly blaming the recent 43-day federal government shutdown and related FAA-linked cancellations. Southwest and United both saw notable declines, and experts say the region’s large federal and defense workforce likely contributed to fewer trips. Local leaders previously touted the COS–Baltimore route as key for aerospace and military travel.

2. Acacia Park ice rink stays open for skating during record-breaking heat (gazette.com) — If you’re looking to skate this season, Acacia Park’s temporary rink is staying open in downtown Colorado Springs despite record-breaking warmth, thanks to heavy-duty cooling systems and constant maintenance. The popular “Skate in the Park” attraction, drawing about 20,000 visitors each year, will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas but open again through Jan. 31 for families and teens alike.

3. Police: Driver involved in 3-car crash in Colorado Springs dies (kktv.com) — A driver involved in a three-car crash on North Academy in Colorado Springs earlier this month has died from injuries linked to an apparent medical episode behind the wheel. Police say speed and alcohol were not factors, and no one else suffered serious injuries. The driver’s identity has not yet been released by authorities.

4. Getting your kid an e-bike for Christmas? Think again (krdo.com) — If you’re eyeing an e-bike or e-moto for your child in Colorado Springs, local trauma experts and police urge serious caution. CSPD stresses that kids must be truly ready to handle these powerful machines safely, noting serious crashes and deaths elsewhere in Colorado. Officials warn that what looks like a toy can quickly become life-threatening in inexperienced hands.

5. Police: Suspect flees in SUV partially covered in red and white wrapping paper (krdo.com) — Colorado Springs police are looking for a suspect who tried to rob a bank near 3100 Jetwing Drive on Christmas Eve, then fled in a black SUV partly covered in red-and-white wrapping paper. Staff locked the doors before the person could get inside, and no injuries were reported. Investigators say the suspect wore a painter-style coverall, mask, and gloves.
