📰 News we're reading

1. Paving, bridge work completed on Woodmen Road in Colorado Springs; officials to monitor winter impact (krdo.com) — Drivers on Woodmen Road can now use a newly repaved 1.5‑mile stretch between Academy Boulevard and I‑25, where Colorado Springs crews just finished paving with a new stone mastic asphalt. City engineers will watch how the pricier material holds up through winter and may use it on Circle Drive next year, while recent bridge and median upgrades aim to improve safety and reduce congestion.

2. ‘Once they begin to ignite, it is a very violent reaction': Battery fires continue to grow in numbers in Colorado Springs (kktv.com) — Colorado Springs Fire Department is warning residents about a sharp rise in dangerous lithium‑ion battery fires across the city and sharing steps to stay safe. From e-bikes to kids’ toys, officials explain how overheating batteries can suddenly ignite and why you should call 911 at the first sign of smoke. They also offer a simple “CHARGE” checklist to reduce risks at home.

3. Colorado Springs finishes improvements along Sinton Trail (gazette.com) — Sinton Trail in Colorado Springs is now fully open again after the city upgraded the surface to concrete, improved drainage, and removed an old overhead waterline. Funded by Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority, the 3-mile route through Douglas Creek Open Space reconnects Sinton Pond with the Pikes Peak Greenway, restoring an important recreational and transportation link for northwest residents.

4. Cannabis retailers celebrate potential reclassification from Schedule 1 to Schedule 3 (koaa.com) — Cannabis businesses in Colorado Springs are reacting to President Trump’s executive order that could move marijuana from Schedule 1 to Schedule 3, potentially easing their heavy tax burden and opening access to credit card payments. Local police say they’ll keep enforcing existing Colorado law and city ordinances for now, so any real changes for Springs retailers and customers will depend on federal follow-through.

5. Colorado Springs police stress package safety during holidays (kktv.com) — Colorado Springs police are warning residents that leaving delivery boxes visible outside can tip off thieves about valuables inside your home. Officers urge people to break down boxes, remove labels, use trash or recycling bins, and avoid burning cardboard during the dry holiday season to reduce theft and fire risks.
