Student In Hospital After Shooting Outside Middle School

A young man is in critical condition after a shooting near DSST: Cole Middle School in Denver.

DENVER, CO – A student from DSST: Cole Middle School was hospitalized in critical condition after a shooting around 2 p.m. in the 3200 block of North Marion Street.

The school announced around 6:45 p.m. that the victim was a student and confirmed that he had been taken to a local hospital.

"...[O]ur hearts are broken as we share the news that one of our middle school students was injured in a shooting outside the middle school this afternoon," the school posted on their Facebook page. "We will let the whole community know when we have more information. School will be in session tomorrow and we will offer counseling and other emotional supports for our students throughout the day. As a community, we will continue the important work of educating our students with safety as our utmost priority."

The incident closed streets near Cole Arts and Sciences Academy and DSST: Cole Middle School. Police said the incident did not happen inside the school. No suspect information was available, police said.

Police blocked off the street near Martin Luther King Drive and diverted traffic during the investigation.

Denver Police Chief Paul Pazen gave a brief press conference about 3:45 p.m., where he confirmed that a young man had been shot outside the school. The youth was taken to the hospital and was in critical condition.

DSST: Cole Middle School (formerly Mitchell Middle School) was on lockdown for about an hour and parents gathered outside the school around 3:30 p.m., some wiping away tears, having been texting with their frightened children inside the school.

Mother Stormy Ware told Denver7 she and her children prayed every day for their safety when she dropped them at school. Neighbor Cindee Sherry said she heard "about five gunshots" around 2 p.m.

Later in the evening, Denver Public Schools released a statement that they had made a mistake announcing an arrest in the case.

Police did not make an announcement about an arrest Tuesday night.
