Here are the top stories today in Denver:

  1. The Department of Justice has awarded more than $33 million to law enforcement agencies and jurisdictions across the country. The City and County of Denver is receiving $176,587 for a grant that aims to reduce the intensity of police encounters with the public in intense situations. (Denver Patch)
  2. Denver City Council has postponed its vote on a citywide ban of flavored tobacco. The city's safety committee debated for two hours before the postponement. Councilwoman Amanda Sawyer co-sponsored the proposal after a classmate tried to sell her 12-year-old daughter vape products. (9News)
  3. Mild drought conditions hit Denver in mid-September, and since then, the drought has worsened, according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor. Our region is classified as 'D1: Moderate Drought,' according to the monitor, which is published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. (Denver Patch)
  4. Mayor Michael Hancock led the groundbreaking Wednesday for 72 apartments for people experiencing homelessness. Valor on the Fax will include between one and three bedroom units for those who have a disability or brain injury. (9News)
  5. Denver Public Schools is facing a milk shortage due to the widespread staffing issues that are impacting Colorado and other states, district officials said. Local parents were warned this week that milk distribution would be impacted by staffing shortages. (CBS Denver)
