Denver police are warning that ATM skimmers are targeting area gas stations.

DENVER, CO – Denver police are seeking ATM skimmers who have allegedly set up data-capturing devices in local gas stations.

Police are offering a $2,000 reward through Metro Denver Crime Stoppers for information leading to the arrest of a man and woman connected with ATM skimming schemes between March and August at local Valero gas stations in Denver and the western Metro-Denver suburbs.

Police released a photo of a man and a woman who appeared to be holding a sleeping child. Police said the couple had placed and removed ATM skimmers between dates of Mar 9 - Aug. 15. The couple may be driving a "newer black Mercedes SUV or an older, possible, Acura with unknown plates."

ATM skimmers are devices or reading chips placed inside credit cart slots that hijack account data from the magnetic strips on credit cards. If a credit card does not slide easily into a slot at a merchant or gas station, there could be a skimmer device attached to the machine, according to PC Magazine.

ATM skimmers often put a false plastic front piece onto the card reader, accompanied by a pinhole camera to record a consumer's PIN number.
